The Best Sleep Position for a Restful Night
Are you waking up in the morning with sore shoulders and an achy lower back? Side lying is the best position for avoiding morning aches and pains.
If you’re ready to wake up refreshed, consider the following:
1. Sit on the side of your bed before going into a side lying position.
2. Give a good hug to the shoulder that will press against the bed. Do this by holding your arm across the body as you come in contact with the bed. You want the shoulder joint to be out of the way from being compressed while you are lying overnight. If you have shoulder problems, keep your affected shoulder on top, supported by a pillow between your trunk and top arm.
3. Keep your nose in the midline to ensure your cervical spine will be held in the good physiological position– keep it pointing straight ahead!
4. While lying on your side, put a pillow between your knees to provide relief to your lower back. Keep your knees bent at a comfortable range of 50 to 80 degrees.
5. Ensure that your hips are stacked on top of each other, facing forward so no rotation occurs in your spine.
6. If you’re prone to waking up in a different position in the morning, you can place another pillow behind you on your mattress to stop you from rolling.
